Presiding Bishop Michael Curry calls for prayer for Ecuador

[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs press release] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael B. Curry has called for prayers for the people and Dioceses of Ecuador following a devastating earthquake on April 16.

Two dioceses of the Episcopal Church are located in Ecuador:

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit the South American country on Saturday, April 16.  News reports indicate the death toll is over 200 people with 2,500 injured.

The following is the message Presiding Bishop Curry sent to the bishops and people:

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Please know that your brothers and sisters throughout the Episcopal Church are praying for you. We will be with you during this time and in the days ahead. You are not alone. May the love of God embrace and strength you.

    Yes, please — I grew up as a boy in Quito, Ecuador from 1943 to 1950. I loved the spirit and humanity of that country and the people with whom I grew up. I experienced an Earthquake in Quito and Ambato when the volcanoes Tunguragua and Sangay caused a severe earthquake in the late 1940’s. I remember the smell of dead bodies that permeated the air for weeks thereafter. I experienced that again when, as a Parishioner of the Church of the Transfiguration, and as Executive Director of the Epicopal Actors’ Guild of America, a large group of us associated with that Parish spent many, many hours in the aftermath days of the 9-11 disaster, feeding and giving rest to the first responders at St. Paul’s Church. Please, PLEASE, let’s all do everything we can to support the Ecuadorians who are suffering so much these days ! Let us encourage the US Government to overlook its differences with Ecuador’s present government, and do the right thing PLEASE !!!??
