[Episcopal Diocese of New York] The Rt. Rev. Mark S. Sisk, Episcopal Bishop of New York, will travel to the Titanic’s home port of Southampton, England this coming weekend, April 14 and 15 at the invitation of that city’s mayor and as a guest of the Bishop of Southampton, the Rt. Rev. Jonathan H. Frost, to participate in events marking the centenary of the sinking, accompanied by the loss of 1,500 lives, of the “unsinkable” liner following a collision with an iceberg off Newfoundland. The centerpiece of his trip will be his participation in, and preaching at, the 100^th Anniversary Commemorative Service at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 15.

The previous evening, Sisk will attend the Gala Dinner of the British Titanic Society on Saturday April 14 at the Grand de Vere Hotel, followed by a memorial service beginning at 11:30 p.m. Early Sunday morning, he will take part in a BBC Radio Solent religious program, followed by a BBC 1, BBC World and BBC news channel TV broadcast from the Engineers Memorial, linked to live footage from the actual site of the sinking. Prior to the Commemorative Service, he will visit and tour the SeaCity Museum, and lunch with the Mayor of Southampton.

“The human story of the Titanic is one that has resonated over the years and will, I believe, continue to do so,” said Bishop Sisk. “It is a great honor for me to have been invited to participate in the centenary commemoration of a terrible event which united Southampton and New York in shared shock and grief a century ago.”
