[Episcopal Public Policy Network policy alert] In recent weeks, our nation again suffered multiple episodes of gun-related violence, and Episcopalians around the country are standing up for safer communities and sensible approaches to reduce gun violence.

We must demand that Congress reform existing gun safety laws and close loopholes in the background check system. Congress is now considering new legislation that threatens to undermine laws that are in place to protect Americans from gun violence.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act – recently introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate – would create federal oversight of concealed firearms. This bill would overrule legislation that states have in place to limit concealed weapons and keep their citizens and communities safe. By allowing concealed-weapons holders to cross state lines, the bill would increase the number of weapons in public spaces, even allowing concealed-weapons permittees to carry their weapons on school properties and on public lands.

As Episcopalians, we are committed to opposing violence, and we urge Congress to enact sensible restrictions that the vast majority of gun owners support, and multiple studies have shown that concealed weapons do not make for safer communities.

Tell your members of Congress you support gun reform to reduce the likelihood of more devastating gun violence events, and urge them to oppose the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act.
