Just in time for the holidays, Trinity Cathedral has published a book which looks back at its more than 100 years of ministry to Phoenix, and how that ministry has changed as the city itself has changed.

From its roots as Trinity Church in the 1880s, to the completion of the Cathedral in 1920, through all the years and decades up to the present day, the book expands upon a timeline based on a deep dive through its own and diocesan archives as part of Trinity’s Centennial Celebration.

“In the same manner as the city of Phoenix experienced booms, busts, and moments of renewal, the people of Trinity Cathedral have continued to make a mark on their city,” the Very Rev. Troy D. Mendez, dean of the cathedral, said of the relationship between the cathedral and the wider community. “This history of Trinity and Phoenix, from the early times to the reality of living in the fifth largest city in the United States, reveals the characteristics of a hopeful, forward-looking people whom God has put in a specific time and place to carry out the mission and ministry of Jesus and his way of love.”

With such a focus on history, the book concludes by trying to draw on all of the rich events of the Cathedral’s past to provide context and ideas for how it might respond to the needs and challenges of its next century.

“This lens allows us to see the ministry of Trinity Cathedral and the Episcopal Church in context, both in how we have faithfully responded to challenges and opportunities; and how we have been reflective of the limitations of class and generation,” said the R.t Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall, Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona. “I pray that as we learn our history, we can celebrate and emulate what is for the building up of the body of Christ; and where we find shortcomings, to repent and commit ourselves anew to our love of God and neighbor.”
