[Anglican Alliance] The Anglican Alliance is calling for prayers for people affected by an undersea earthquake in the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami, killing people and destroying homes on some outlying islands.

With a magnitude 8.0, the earthquake triggered a three foot tsunami, which hit Lata on eastern Santa Cruz island. The wave damaged homes and properties on the western coast of Santa Cruz, killing four elderly people and one young boy.  There are reports of further damage to villages along the coast, with waves also traveling more than 500 meters inland.

Other tsunami warnings for Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribat, and Wallis and Futuna islands were later cancelled as the danger passed.

The Alliance are calling for Anglican communities to pray for the people living in the area, and to commit to God everyone who has been affected.  We particularly lift up the families of the five people killed by the tsunami, and the communities whose villages and livelihoods have been destroyed.

The airport serving the local region is still functioning and so aid and supplies are being provided, and the Anglican Alliance relief manager is in touch.
