In April, Church Publishing released Walking the Church Year by Robert J.F. Elsner, a spiritually nourishing book about the transcendent practice of walking a labyrinth.

For centuries, Christians have turned to labyrinths to deepen their personal relationships with God. Now Elsner, author of the successful Bible Study for Freemasons, unravels the mysteries of this tradition for modern-day Christians. He reveals an easy-to-follow blueprint for a regular meditative practice, whether the reader chooses to walk along the blue marble of Chartres or in the grass of their own backyard.

Walking the Church Year offers personal devotions for many holidays and occasions throughout the liturgical calendar. Each entry provides scripture to contemplate before entering the labyrinth, a prayer or mantra for use within it, a prayer or reflection on the occasion, and questions to inspire further thought. “These spiritual walks water the reader’s souls with optimism and hope,” says Robert D. Flanagan, Chaplain for The General Theological Seminary.

A lifelong Episcopalian and an alumnus of Virginia Theological Seminary, Elsner is Professor and Chair of Psychology at Samford University and the former founding director of the Counseling program at Erskine Theological Seminary.
