Job Description
Are you interested in creation care, sustainable living, and working with the earth? Are you seeking to grow closer to God and be formed in contemplative spirituality? The Benedictine Way would love to hear from you! We are seeking an Urban Gardening Resident to live in Christian community, pray and be formed in Benedictine Spirituality, and serve the poor and forgotten through the management of three urban gardens. The resident would join in prayer twice/day, Tuesday-Saturday, join community meals three times/week, and manage the gardens (~25 hours/week).

Garden Responsibilities:

  • Start seeds and plant seedlings
  • Encourage growth by watering, spreading compost, weeding, etc.
  • Improve garden sustainability by monitoring soil health, addressing pests, maintenance of irrigation system, etc.
  • Harvest produce during and at the end of the growing season
  • Coordinate with Pantry Director to transport produce to The Benedictine Way’s biweekly food pantry, at which 90%of the garden’s produce is given away
  • Maintain inventory of gardening supplies
  • Manage garden volunteers
  • Prepare beds for next growing season
  • Envision new and innovative ways to improve the efficiency of the gardens

The minimum residency time is the 2024 growing season, approx. May 15-Nov. 1, with an option to remain longer, a decision made in conjunction with the Prior. The Urban Gardening Resident lives on The Benedictine Way campus, housing & utilities provided, and receives a $1,000 monthly stipend.
