Trinity Wall Street offers prayers for Mandela

Posted Dec 6, 2013

[Trinity Wall Street] The people of Trinity Church today join me in prayers for the repose of the soul of Nelson Mandela. God has received South Africa’s first black president into God’s loving arms. We give thanks for his life and may God continue to bless his family and the people of South Africa.

Through divestment in companies active in South Africa during the apartheid era, and through direct support of leaders like Desmond Tutu, Trinity rightly added its name to the lengthy list of the world’s active anti-apartheid supporters. The parish joined with others who realized that even though we are separated by geography, we are not separated spiritually; who realized we could support those on the front lines of righting a deep injustice.

Our support of the movement is now part of this parish’s DNA, and a chief reminder of why we work in partnership to build God’s kingdom both near, in New York City, and far, across the oceans. May we be inspired today by the life of a prophet, and stand ready to continue the reconciling work of God in response.

Faithfully,
The Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper
Rector
