Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys Announces Release of New Choral Album: ‘The Music of Gerre Hancock’

Saint Thomas Church 5th Ave., New York, NY
Posted Apr 13, 2021

The world-renowned Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys will release their first album since 2014 on Friday, April 23, 2021 on the Signum Classics label. It is a musical tribute to former Organist and Choirmaster, Gerre Hancock (1934-2012), who held the post at Saint Thomas Church for more than thirty years. He was, with the Rector at the time, the Rev. John Andrew, a pivotal figure in the revival of the choir and its associated school’s fortune, and he created a wealth of choral and organ music during the course of his career – much of it composed for friends and colleagues across the USA. Therefore, it could not be more fitting for the church’s current musicians to have recorded Gerre Hancock’s music.

The performances on the new recording are led by Dr. Jeremy Filsell, the present Organist and Director of Music, with accompaniment from Benjamin Sheen (Associate Organist), Nicholas Quardokus (Assistant Organist), and The Saint Thomas Brass ensemble.

The music included on this album ranges from Gerre Hancock’s beloved and heartfelt arrangement of ‘Deep River’ to his bold and brilliant anthems such as ‘A Song to the Lamb’ featuring The Saint Thomas Brass and ‘Jubilate Deo’. The album also includes two organ works of Gerre Hancock, performed by current Organist and Director of Music, Jeremy Filsell.
