Presiding Bishop names search committee for Episcopal Church indigenous missioner

Posted May 13, 2016

[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs] Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has named the members of the search committee to review and edit a position description and interview candidates for the Episcopal Church indigenous missioner, a member of the presiding bishop’s staff.

Named to the committee are:

  • Judge Richard Ackley, Diocese of Fond du Lac
  • Isaiah Brokenleg, Diocese of Fond du Lac
  • Bishop Mark Lattime, Diocese of Alaska
  • The Rev. Deacon Lewis Powell, Diocese of Northern California
  • Byron Sloan, Diocese of Arizona
  • Colleen Swan, Diocese of Alaska
  • The Rev. Rachel Tabor-Hamilton, Diocese of Olympia

The Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén, missioner for Hispanic/Latino ministries  will serve as the staff liaison to the search committee being supported by John E. Colón, director of human resources, and the Rev. Canon Michael Hunn, canon to the presiding bishop for ministry within the Episcopal Church.

The search committee will review the current position job description and provide advice concerning updating, changes, or modifications to reflect the current and future needs of indigenous peoples in the Episcopal Church.  Once finalized the new job description will be posted and applicants will be invited to apply. The search committee will then review all applications and conduct interviews, either in person or by video.

“I am grateful to all the faithful people who have applied to be members of this search committee – I wish I could have appointed every one!” the presiding bishop said. “I have appointed a group small enough to work efficiently and diverse enough to be broadly representative of this important ministry. This is important work and an important position, as the indigenous missioner will serve as my primary link to the native peoples throughout the Episcopal Church.”

In April, Curry invited volunteers to serve on the search committee to assist him in the appointment of the next indigenous missioner.
