Pedestrian dies from lightning strike at Christ Church, Cobble Hill

[Episcopal Diocese of Long Island] Lightning from a group of severe thunderstorms July 26 struck Christ Church in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, causing masonry and scaffolding to collapse. Mr. Richard Schwartz, 61, was struck by the falling debris and later pronounced dead at Long Island College Hospital. Our hearts are with his loved ones and friends at this time. The Rt. Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano, Bishop of Long Island, has asked the churches throughout the diocese to offer prayers for Mr. Schwartz and all who were affected by this tragic accident.

The parish and the diocese together are working cooperatively with the city engineers to determine the scope of the damage and a best remedy. The parish property has been closed until such time as it has been deemed safe. The safety of our neighbors is our first priority. The entire diocesan family is incredibly saddened by the events of this accident.

Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to your never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing
that you are doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
