[Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs] Now there are two ways to participate in the popular Episcopal Church conference, Nuevo Amanecer: Many People, One Family, a conference addressing the diverse aspects of Latino/Hispanic ministry. Participants have the option of attending in person, or following the presentations from a distance online.

Co-sponsored by the Episcopal Church Office of Latino/Hispanic Ministries and Kanuga Conference Center, Nuevo Amanecer will be held August 27-30 at Kanuga in Hendersonville, NC.

“Nuevo Amanecer is a biennial event that offers practical tools and a network of support to better equip for ministry those working within the Latino/Hispanic community as well as those who want to be,” explained the Rev. Canon Anthony Guillén, Episcopal Church Missioner for Latino/Hispanic Ministry.

Keynoting the event are Bishop Dan Edwards of the Diocese of Nevada, Victor A. Feliberty-Ruberté, and the Rev. Simon Bautista of the Diocese of Washington.

Clergy, diocesan missioners, parish staff, church planters and lay leaders are invited to expand their knowledge by sharing best practices and exploring new methods of stewardship, church growth and evangelism. Participants will learn strategies and ideas for starting and strengthening Latino/Hispanic congregations.

An added feature this year is a full children and youth Christian formation component which is designed to allow families to attend this conference together.

New this year – Nuevo Amanecer ONLINE

“There are so many people who cannot participate in person but who would love to be able to join in the learning and conversation, so this year we are offering Nuevo Amanecer ONLINE,” Guillén explained.

Live video streaming of the plenary sessions, select workshops and worship services will be available through Nuevo Amanecer ONLINE.

Nuevo Amanecer ONLINE is ideal for group gatherings and discussions as well as individual viewing.

Meet the keynoters

The Rt. Rev. Dan Edwards has served as bishop of Nevada since 2007. Previously he spent nearly 20 years in parish ministry, serving churches in Georgia. There he founded a spiritual direction training program; served on the board of Koinonia Partners, an interracial farming community; was active in a racial reconciliation group project; and was a leader in Industrial Areas Foundation community organizing efforts. He continues to be involved in the IAF in Las Vegas. He practiced law in Idaho for many years before a desire for faith community led him to the Episcopal Church. He has master’s degrees in divinity and sacred theology in spiritual direction from General Theological Seminary.

The Rev. Simon Bautista serves as the canon for Latino ministries in the Diocese of Washington, D.C. He was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States in 1993. He officiates at the Spanish-language service at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC as well as at Iglesia La Ascensión Gaithersburg, MD and Iglesia Nuestro Salvador in Silver Spring, MD. He serves as president of the board of directors of Casa de Maryland, a community organization that works to improve the quality of life and fights for equal treatment and full access to resources and opportunities for low-income Latinos and their families.

Victor A. Feliberty-Ruberté is a leadership consultant, educator and business management engineer. Since 2002 he has served the Episcopal Church in the areas of preaching, mission development, Christian formation and ecumenical relations.
