NYC Official Will Join Leadership Team as Trinity Seeks to Expand Its Impact in the City, Supporting Post-Pandemic Needs and Efforts to Promote Justice and Equity for All

NEW YORK, May 26, 2021 – Trinity Church Wall Street announced today that Jim Johnson, currently Corporation Counsel for the City of New York, will join as Chief Operating Officer on June 8. Johnson will join Trinity’s leadership team, driving strategies and plans across the organization, working closely with the Priest-in-charge and Vestry, and managing Trinity’s core operational functions.

“Trinity has responded to the crises of the last year in several ways: with compassion for those who have suffered; with calls for justice for the oppressed; with action to address the severe needs of this time; and with a discernment process to chart the path forward with a view toward having a greater impact in New York City,” said the Rev. Phillip A. Jackson, Priest-in-charge of Trinity. “As we look to deepen and expand our work to lift up all New Yorkers, Jim’s unique blend of expertise and experience in public policy, government, law, and business and his commitment to justice, equity, and serving the community make him a perfect leader for this time. We are thrilled to welcome him to Trinity.”

Johnson currently serves as Corporation Counsel for New York City’s Law Department, the largest municipal law department in the country. Prior to that, he was Special Counsel to Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey, where he led the review of the state’s 2016 takeover of Atlantic City and charted the course for its future. He also was a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton and former Under Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.

Johnson has served on the boards of several nonprofits, including the Brennan Center for Justice, Citizens Campaign, Harvard University’s Board of Overseers, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, and Jazz House Kids. Jim has a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from Harvard and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
