EPPN Alert: Join the Advent Challenge; Journey from Gratitude to Hope

Posted Dec 16, 2015

[Episcopal Public Policy Network] This Advent season, our world faces the largest refugee crisis ever known with 60 million persons currently displaced, nearly 20 million of whom are refugees– and half of whom are children.

As we approach the final Sunday of Advent, we invite you to take part in the United Thank Offering’s Advent Challenge: Journey from Gratitude to Hope, which calls on Episcopalians to support Episcopal Migration Ministries. United Thank Offering will match the first $30,000 given by December 31, 2015 that is donated for Episcopal Migration Ministries. Find out how you can participate in this Advent challenge here!

“Jesus was part of a refugee family,” commented Sandra Squires, President of the United Thank Offering board. “We should be able to relate to the upheaval of today’s refugees through our love of him.” Deborah Stein, Director of Episcopal Migration Ministries, also commented, “It is hope that drives every refugee to journey to new life away from everything they know in a faraway place like the United States.”

Known worldwide as UTO, the United Thank Offering grants are awarded for projects that address human needs and help to alleviate both domestic and international poverty in The Episcopal Church.

Each year, the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society, through its Episcopal Migration Ministries refugee resettlement service and a network of local organizations, faith communities and volunteers, welcomes 5,000 refugees to more than 30 communities across the United States. Refugees arrive in the United States having fled from the most violent and war-torn places on earth, and are provided with the support that they need to become productive, resilient members of our society and economy.

Donations to the Advent: Journey from Gratitude to Hope challenge are accepted online here. Just select “UTO for EMM challenge” from the drop down menu under “designation” and write “EMM” in the “comments” section.

You can also donate by check. Checks should have UTO-EMM in the memo line.
