The Executive Council of The Episcopal Church will convene as a virtual meeting June 25-28, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure the health and safety of all involved.

Those wishing to view the plenary sessions on YouTube can access the livestream here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIhx_XOwInDUpdMBBWrVw6A.

During the plenary session on June 25, the council will hear a presentation on a racial justice audit of Episcopal leadership conducted by The Mission Institute in partnership with The Episcopal Church. More than 1,300 members of the church’s key leadership bodies were surveyed and interviewed about their experiences of racism, racial identity, and power in the church. The resulting report – which the council will discuss on June 26 — offers major patterns and themes, as well as stories and questions to consider.

The plenary on June 26 will include a discussion on deradicalization, with recommendations offered for The Episcopal Church.

Executive Council

The Executive Council of the General Convention, an elected body representing the whole Church, carries out the programs and policies adopted by General Convention. Its job is to oversee the ministry and mission of the Church. This includes oversight responsibility for the work done by the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society as well as the disposition of funds and other property in accordance with the Canons of The Episcopal Church and the resolutions, orders, and budgets adopted or approved by the General Convention. Also included is oversight responsibility for the work of the Office of General Convention.

The Executive Council is comprised of twenty members elected by General Convention (four bishops, four priests or deacons and twelve laypersons) and eighteen members (one clergy, one lay) elected by province. The Presiding Bishop and the President of the House of Deputies are the Chair and Vice Chair.  The other officers of the Executive Council are ex-officio with seat and voice but no vote.
