Camp Kanuga in Hendersonville, NC, founded 90 years ago, is planning to open for summer 2021. The co-ed overnight summer camp welcomes children in rising grades 2-11 for six sessions as well as starter camps, and youth in rising grades 11-12 for a leadership academy experience.

In 2020, Camp Kanuga—like hundreds of other summer camps—was not open due to concerns about the pandemic. But now, with guidance from the American Camp Association, CDC, NC Youth Camp Association, and local health authorities, camp leadership feels more confident about opening safely and being able to offer a full experience for campers and staff.

“There were so many unknowns when we had to make the decision to close camp in 2020,” says interim director Jimmy Haden, a camp alumnus who has worked at Kanuga for 27 years. “Now we know so much more, and we can benefit from the advice of our camp industry colleagues who did open last summer.”

Haden says Camp Kanuga will be enhanced this year with a new mountain biking program for campers at Ride Kanuga, a world-class downhill trail system that opened in July.

Since 1931, Camp Kanuga campers have been forming lifelong friendships, experiencing new adventures, and exploring their faith in an inclusive Christian community that welcomes those of all faiths and backgrounds.

Camp Kanuga is a co-ed summer camp affiliated with The Episcopal Church located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Camp Kanuga is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) the industry leader in setting standards for camp program quality and youth development education. Camp Kanuga is committed to promoting growth and fun in a safe, nurturing environment. All programs are designed to build independence and self-confidence in youth while teaching the importance of respect toward each other and for the world around them.
