16 days of activism against gender-based violence begin Friday

Posted Nov 23, 2016

[Episcopal Public Policy Network] Join the Episcopal Public Policy Network with Episcopal Relief & Development and the We Will Speak Out Coalition in recognizing the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,” a campaign aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action to eliminate violence against women and girls. The campaign will begin this Friday, Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and will end on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day.

Gender-based Violence (GBV) impacts the health and well-being of women in every country, regardless of socio-economic status. Stemming from social norms, attitudes and cultural practices, GBV is a complex and sensitive issue. Faith leaders can have a unique position of trust and influence when they speak out against gender-based violence, and given their visibility, they can deliver vital messaging to a broad audience. Yet, all of us who are committed to living out our Baptismal covenant have the responsibility at the individual level to speak out against GBV and to encourage effective change in our communities.
