Job Description
REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
Position: Theological Education Market Research Consultant
The Beyond These Wall collective, in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Northern
Michigan, seeks a consultant or consulting group to conduct market research for the need and scope of alternative models of leadership development for theological education.
Applications from individuals or consulting groups are welcome. This is for a 6-month
contract, spanning roughly from October 2021-April 2022, with the possibility of extension.Who We Are: The Beyond These Walls is a racially and culturally diverse, women- &
nonbinary-led collective of theological educators, together with the Episcopal Diocese of
Northern Michigan and the online community, The Hive. Together, we are developing as-yet unimagined forms of theological education to resource emerging leaders in diverse contexts for which the current model of seminary education has insufficient answers, and from which many emerging leaders have been left out. We begin from the premise that theological education should be de-colonized, de-commodified, trauma-informed, fallibility-embracing, and justice centered.

Beyond These Walls recognizes the need for innovation in leadership formation to address the needs of faith communities and honor the gifts already present in populations who have been traditionally marginalized. We center the pedagogy of women of color, who have been organizing along similar lines. We utilize strengths-based models of assessment that identify leadership competencies, and we develop leadership education and formation models in various contexts outside the walls of traditional seminaries and parish ministry.

The Beyond These Walls collective is uniquely positioned to provide leadership training in this context because we collectively bring wide-ranging expertise to the formational environment.

Accomplished theological educators lead the Beyond These Walls collective and represent
Black, White, African, Latinx, Indigenous, and Korean backgrounds. We are straight and LGBTQ and teach in urban, suburban, and rural contexts, across the spectrum of traditional theological disciplines. We are academically trained artists, activists, administrators, church leaders, and theological educators.

We are seeking a consultant who embraces this expansive and inclusive vision of theological education and who can support this team of scholars, educators, and faith leaders by providing foundational market research for the project.

Responsibilities:
• Conducting focus groups and interviewing stakeholders,
• Surveying existing models of theological education,
• Reviewing emerging pedagogies and delivery systems,
• Building and assessing community interest,
• Collaborating with members of the Beyond These Walls collective,
• Evaluating proposed curriculum design on the basis of market research,
• Designing ongoing program assessment for long-term planning,
• Assisting Beyond These Walls to achieve and track grant deliverables; and,
• Regularly summarizing findings for both grant reports and the Beyond These Walls
collective.

Qualifications:
• Five plus years of relevant experience in all or most of these categories: program
development and implementation, outreach methodologies and organizing, and
theological education;
• Well-versed in community-based programs and antiracism work;
• Passion for theological education, a healthy work ethic and collaborative spirit;
• Ability to effectively communicate and work with internal and external individuals from a
wide variety of backgrounds, religious traditions, and political beliefs;
• Strong writing and public speaking skills;
• Exceptional ability to organize and pay attention to detail;
• Creative spirit and willingness to learn and grow;
• Experience working with a diversity of clergy, spiritual leaders, lay leaders, Houses of
Worship, and seminaries; and
• Advanced computer skills, including familiarity with databases.

Hours and Compensation: We are seeking a consultant or consulting group to work
approximately 20 hours per week over the course of six months. Available budget will allow for an hourly rate of $40-$70, commensurate with experience. Start date: ASAP, negotiable.

Anti-Discrimination Policy: Beyond These Walls is an equal opportunity employer that does not discriminate against any employee or job applicant based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, veteran status, or marital status. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including, but not limited to, hiring, termination, promotion, transfer, layoff, leaves of absence, compensation and training.
