|The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is searching for an experienced full-time rector. We are a strong and caring community, seeking a creative and imaginative rector who will inspire our spiritual development, provide compassionate pastoral care, support our work for social justice, help expand our service to others, and build a younger and more diverse congregation, while continuing to benefit from the commitment of our current members. Most important of all, we’re looking for a rector who will lead us in practicing the Way of Love for one another, and for all people.
The congregation numbers around 100, many of whom are active older people who have built and maintain some of our strong outreach efforts. We have a long history of welcoming people of diverse identities and life-styles; we have strong lay leaders who are dedicated to social justice and community outreach. Redeemer’s history of both welcoming and partnering with groups focused on societal challenges and social justice issues is considerable and enduring.
Church of the Redeemer appreciates inspired preaching, as well as the liturgy and liturgical music of the Episcopal Church, which enriches our celebration of Word and Sacrament. And although the traditional Book of Common Prayer service remains at the heart of our common worship, we are open to experiments for pastoral reasons.
Our church is located in Squirrel Hill, in Pittsburgh’s East End. Squirrel Hill is the real-life basis for the TV show Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. His church is almost across the street from ours. Squirrel Hill is also the home of a strong and vibrant Jewish community—we are two doors down from the Jewish Community Center, and have collaborated with their Center for Lovingkindness.
Pittsburgh is no longer the “Smoky City,” and young people are moving to the region as the mill jobs have been replaced by opportunities in health care, robotics and research. Its cultural activities surpass those of many much larger cities. Recreational opportunities of all kinds abound.
Redeemer is minutes away from four universities, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the city’s major museums. Half a block away is a thriving area of shops and services, including restaurants from many cultures, especially attracting young people. We are within easy walking distance of two 500-acre city parks.
Our 85-year-old church building has been designated an historical landmark for its charm and architectural significance. It sits in a small campus that includes the rectory, mature trees and a large lawn.
