Job Description
Situated near the beautiful Willamette River in downtown Milwaukie, our church building is located 8 miles south of the city of Portland, and is served by light rail, buses and a well-maintained freeways.  The area boasts many universities, cultural venues, nice homes, good schools and a wide variety of recreational activities.

We are proud that our church is the oldest Episcopal Church in Oregon.   The original 1851 Pioneer Church was donated to the City of Portland Parks and is now located in picturesque surroundings in Sellwood Park. We gather at the Pioneer Church for an annual service and parish family picnic.

St. John’s current physical plant, built in 1948, has been extensively upgraded over the last 20 years.  Our parish financed new construction of the West Wing, which includes offices, accessible restrooms, a large meeting room, and a welcoming narthex. We also completed a major remodel of the nave and altar area so it is accessible for all parishioners and guests. The altar area is designed so it can be reconfigured to create a platform for performances.

St. John’s is a hub of many community services. Our “Feed the Hungry” program caters to 80-100 guests who are in need, serving “sit down” meals (before Co-Vid) almost every Sunday since it started in 1991.  It has not stopped helping others during the pandemic, and is currently serving sack lunches. This program is now a 501-C3, and is supported by many parishioners, as well as community members and organizations. Every first Friday of the month from May to October our congregation opens its doors for community poetry readings and art exhibitions as part of Milwaukie’s First Friday Arts program. We are looking forward to resuming these events post Co-Vid.  The Children’s Clothing Closet provides new clothes for children in local elementary schools to enable them to feel more confident at the beginning of the school year.

Sunday services are at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. The 10:00 a.m. service includes both traditional and contemporary music led by our talented Music and Choir Director and an adult choir. Occasional visiting musicians offer special music as well. Our weekly Wednesday evening service, currently on Zoom, is followed by various adult education series.  St. John’s Sunday school follows the Godly Play curriculum and is well resourced. The members of our Altar Guild also provide and arrange locally sourced flowers throughout the year.

We are blessed to have the services of an excellent audio/visual technical director.  With a donation from a parish member for equipment and his expertise, we were able to continue our worship during the Co-Vid pandemic using Zoom and YouTube to allow our services to reach people in their own homes.  Going forward, this feature will allow parishioners unable to physically attend to be part of our service.  Our internet outreach has been met with a very enthusiastic response from members locally, statewide and nationally.

Our congregation enjoys many social and fundraising events throughout the year which we hope to resume after the pandemic. A cookie sale and Christmas poinsettia sale, a Spring Plant sale, along with Chili Cook-off and Trivia Night are some of our most popular activities.
