St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock, North Carolina, is seeking a rector to guide our parish into the future through the qualities of caring, engaging, uplifting spiritual leadership. We feel it is important that our priest possess the life experiences that would enable her/him to be empathetic, relatable, approachable and authentic – the key rector qualities identified by our members via a recent parish-wide survey. Understanding, compassionate pastoral care is a hallmark of our church, and as such, these qualities are expected in our rector.
It is essential that our new rector be able to effectively communicate across all age groups through sermons, parish meetings, individual visits with parishioners, etc., to engage and impassion our congregation. We seek messages through Sunday sermons that connect scripture with everyday life. We appreciate lessons that contain anecdotes, humor and emotion and those that inspire us to think, reflect and discern on our own. Strong writing skills are required for publications, parish communications, monthly newsletter, etc. It is also important to understand the value of social media in communicating with younger families and parish youth.
We are a congregation that reflects our local community. Flat Rock and the surrounding area is a popular retirement destination, hence our membership is heavily weighted toward that age group. However, we seek a priest who can oversee managed growth of our membership across all demographics, including an eye toward attracting and engaging young families. We want a rector who has a keen understanding of the importance that youth programs have in building the future of our parish. We desire a rector who possesses the ability to tap into the many talents of the congregation as we develop an ongoing vision for our church. This requires the ability to listen to our members and build a consensus for where we want to go over the next several years. This sort of inclusive, strategic leadership is an essential quality we are seeking.
St. John and our members have always had a strong commitment to outreach ministries which are an important part of the fabric of our church. Involvement and support for providing assistance to those in need beyond the walls of our parish is considered an important part of our rector’s responsibilities.
Finally, we want a leader who appreciates the position that St. John in the Wilderness has established in the diocese, the Village of Flat Rock and the greater Western North Carolina area. We are the oldest parish in the diocese and are proud of our history, traditions and connection to the people and places that have made us who we are today. The overwhelming majority of our parishioners indicate high satisfaction with our traditional form of liturgy and worship. We seek someone who appreciates the legacy established through our 183-year history and can successfully lead St. John forward while continuing to build on the foundation that enables us to accomplish what our mission statement enjoins us to do: “To know and love God as He is revealed to us in Jesus Christ, to bring others to His saving love and to serve the world in His name.”
