Job Description | |
St. John’s is an active, healthy parish in West Hartford, CT. Worship is the heart of the St. John’s community, and we offer a varied program of services, including spoken and choral Holy Eucharist, Choral Evensong, a monthly Celtic contemplative service, youth-led liturgies, and outdoor summer services. The congregation has been growing, with new members of all ages, including families attracted by the vibrant programs for children and youth.
St. John’s is known regionally for musical excellence, and music is part of nearly everything we do, including worship, education, and outreach. St. John’s is home to a Royal School of Church Music-affiliated Youth Choir, a semi-professional Adult Choir, and the Music at the Red Door community concert series, which draws diverse audiences for both live and online concerts. St. John’s location, straddling a suburban-urban border in the midst of both privilege and need, informs our commitment to community partnerships and outreach. With strategic emphasis on the areas of education/literacy, housing and food security, St. John’s supports multiple community partners with funding and volunteer support, including a local feeding ministry, several independent schools for at-risk students, Hartford’s premier organization addressing homelessness, and ESOL and citizenship classes for refugees and immigrants, which take place in St. John’s education wing (online during the pandemic). Under the leadership of committed clergy (including a full-time assistant rector), staff and lay leaders, St. John’s is in a very stable position, with growth in membership and participation, including during the pandemic. The church is well placed to expand on this growth when the impact of COVID-19 diminishes, and excited about exploring new possibilities with our next clergy leader. Per the Episcopal Church in Connecticut transition process, St. John’s will hire a priest in charge for an initial three-year term; the position may convert to rector after that time. |
