Job Title
Priest in Charge ( 1/2 time,3 years renewable)
Name of church or organization
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church
Portland, ME
Job Description
St. Peter’s is a small congregation in a rapidly changing neighborhood of Portland. Originally founded in the 19th century as a mission to railroad workers and their families, the parish today values its Anglo-Catholic heritage without being confined by it. St. Peter’s is in one sense well established: the church building is a beautiful stone and stained glass structure, and the parish owns two other buildings, and has some modest financial reserves. Yet in a more important sense, St. Peter’s is still a missionary church: the neighborhood around it is thriving, and in ways new to Portland and to Maine. Many new neighbors are newly arrived in the United States; of those, many are from African countries. Connecting to these new neighbors is both a challenge and an opportunity for the congregation, which is aging and whose members arrived generations ago from European countries. But with faith that “in Christ there is no east or west…”, St. Peter’s wants to rise to the challenge of forming new connections, and seeks a priest who will help them discern fresh ways to love God and love neighbor.
