Job Description
St. John the Evangelist is seeking a Priest-in-Charge for an historic, Anglo-Catholic parish on the Point in Newport, Rhode Island.  A unique presence in a distinctive community, the Priest-in-Charge will be called to continue to work with the people of St. John’s in building relationships within the neighborhood, hosting events, and offering space for community organizations to meet. The congregation has forged relationships with The Newport Children’s Theatre, MLK Center, the Island Moving Company, and newportFILM, as well as nurturing a special relationship with the U.S. Naval War College and welcoming visiting service personnel and their families while in Newport.

St. John the Evangelist follows a unique liturgical format in keeping with the terms of The Foundation for the Preservation of the Faith and Worship of the Episcopal Church as Established Prior to the 1976 General Convention, aka “The Foundation for the Preservation of the Faith”.  The FPF provides a significant grant each year. St. John’s current liturgical practice is to draw primarily from the Anglican Service Book.

The PIC will have a role in the ministry of The Choir School of Newport County, founded in 2014 to enhance St. John’s music program and to provide a high-quality musical education to children in the community, including under-served youth. The choir school established a piano and voice program for children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches in the public schools.

In addition, the Priest-in-Charge will work with the Capital Campaign Committee on the $1M Phase 2 of the capital campaign, the fundraising for which began last year. The top two priorities the Vestry has identified for Phase 2 are the rectory and the organ.
