Job Description
St. John’s Episcopal Church, Carlisle, PA seeks an organist-choirmaster to begin late-winter, early spring 2022. The organist choirmaster will serve as St. John’s principal parish musician and educator.  S/he will provide music and music leadership for 2-3 liturgies per week, additional services around Christmas and Easter, annual Epiphany celebration, occasional Evensong services, funerals, and weddings and will lead the adult SATB choir as well as the Men and Youth Choir.

St. John’s Episcopal Church is located on the Town Square in historic Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and shares close ties with other neighboring churches as well as with Dickinson College, an outstanding liberal arts college, and the United States Army War College. Carlisle is a friendly, small city with rich cultural and historical traditions and organizations, all within walking distance of the church. The region affords numerous opportunities for musical engagement and collaboration, supporting one community choral ensemble (Cantate Carlisle), two community orchestras (West Shore Symphony Orchestra and Central Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra), and a local concert series (Fine Arts at First Lutheran) in addition to ensembles and concerts presented by Dickinson College’s music department.

This position is being advertised in coordination with the Dickinson Department of Music, which seeks a parallel teaching position in organ, harpsichord. The person will also provide accompaniment to groups and individual musicians. A candidate may choose to serve in both institutions and may use the St. John’s organ and undercroft piano for teaching students from Dickinson College, and/or teaching private students. St. John’s is well known for having a strong program in sacred music. We value music as an integral part of our liturgy that allows us to worship together in song and explore the devotional riches of our tradition. St. John’s seeks an organist-choirmaster with a mature faith who can take on this leadership position to help grow this ministry within our church. The director should be conversant in the Anglican musical tradition.

This position is 22 hours per week with benefits.

Essential Responsibilities:

Plan musical services in cooperation with Rector and Music and Worship Committees.

Recruit, lead, educate and rehearse adult SATB Choir, Men and Youth Choir, instrumentalists, and choral scholars when the program is developed.

Regular rehearsals happen on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. The annual Twelfth Night celebration requires additional rehearsals before Epiphany.

Facilitate development of special music programs, such as the Twelfth Night Epiphany Festival, and coordinate musical events with outside musicians as needed.

When absent, provide for an appropriate substitute musician to fulfill these requirements.

Provide, or arrange provision for, music at weddings and funerals conducted in the parish and consult and advise parties as necessary to achieve liturgical aims of the services.

Supervise maintenance of the organ, pianos, and other parish musical instruments as needed.

Maintain and grow the music library with volunteer assistance.

Administrative Duties:

With Rector, establish an annual music calendar for liturgical events.

With Rector, recruit and employ other musicians as required to meet liturgical needs of the parish.

Participate in budget development, implementation, and management of musical programs.

Administer expenditure of the music budget, music and organ endowment funds, and provide accounting for funds to Rector, Vestry, and other financial officers designated by the Rector to receive such information.

Attend Wednesday morning staff meetings and other committee meetings as designated by the Rector.

Administer stipends for Youth Choristers.

Participate in a yearly Performance Review with the Rector each May.

As with any ministry position, other duties as assigned by the Rector

 

Essential Qualifications:

Minimum Bachelor’s degree in music and experience working in a liturgical church or comparable setting. Master’s of Music or Sacred Music or equivalent professional experience preferable.

Experience in choral conducting, choral leadership and development.

Knowledge of The Episcopal Church, its worship style and tradition.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs and social media.

Hiring is contingent on passing security background check in accordance with the requirements of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
