The principal Organist and Assistant Choirmaster, in partnership with the Choirmaster, oversees the various music ministries of St. James’, a vibrant congregation in Jackson’s Fondren neighborhood, serving 2000 members with an average Sunday attendance of around 350. Music ministry at St. James’ is firmly anchored in the Anglican heritage of liturgy and music, a tradition that embraces a thousand years of great music from plainchant to Arvo Pärt.
St. James’ has two principal Sunday services with music: 8:40 a.m., with a choir of 16 members; and 11:05 a.m., with a separate choir of 20. Each choir has its own repertoire. The St. James’ organ is a 48 rank, three manual instrument by the Steiner-Reck company of Louisville, KY, installed in 2000.
The Organist/Assistant Choirmaster is a part-time position (approximately 16 hours per week), reporting jointly to the Rector and Choirmaster. Qualified candidates will interview with the Parish Music Committee and play an audition.
Strengths and Skills Required:
Must be an experienced Organist of high performance caliber, fluent and exceptional in the organ repertoire, service playing, choral accompanying, and liturgical improvisation.
Confident and skilled in console conducting and well-versed in knowledge of Episcopal liturgy as contained in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer and the Hymnal 1982.
Possess excellent computer and organizational skills.
Punctuality, professionalism, and communicative skills highly desirable.
Must demonstrate highly developed interpersonal skills.
Must be an exceptional choral conductor, confident and skilled at working with a range of singers, and well-versed in the music of the Anglican tradition, including Anglican and plainchant.
A two-year employment agreement from date of hire will be offered the successful candidate.
