Job Description
St. Thomas is North Carolina’s oldest church and has a special place in our nation’s history and the town of Bath. We are a traditional Rite II worshiping community. Music is an integral part of the life of this parish and serves an important ministry that reaches out to the members of the congregation, choir and church staff, creating opportunities for our church family and members of the community to be drawn into and meaningfully engaged in the church through music.
There is one choir, which operates on a September-May schedule of services and rehearsals, beginning the first Wednesday after Labor Day and ending the first Sunday of Pentecost. The choir sings for regular Sunday worship services September-May, for special holiday services during the Advent, Christmas, Lenten, and Easter seasons, and for other special events in the life of the church.
Rehearsals currently are scheduled after Sunday worship. Additional rehearsals, specifically for holiday events such as Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday, are scheduled at the discretion of the Music Director. Anthems and other special music for Sunday worship services during the summer months consist of solos and small ensembles and are scheduled by the Music Director.
POSITION: ORGANIST/MUSIC DIRECTOR is a part-time position, one Sunday service with one rehearsal with the choir and/or church musicians. Responsibilities also include special services scheduled during Lent, Holy Week, Advent, and Christmas Eve.
ACCOUNTABILITY: The Rector and in the absence of the Rector, the Senior Warden.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinates the music program of the church in a manner that enhances the spirit of worship and assists the congregation in praising God. Selecting music appropriate to the Episcopal/Anglican tradition and following the liturgical calendar. The organist/music director will coordinate with the Rector.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Organist/Music Director, as a trained and accomplished musician, will demonstrate through her/his performance and leadership, an appreciation and understanding of the liturgical traditions of the Episcopal Church. Support worshipers as singers in the Episcopal/Anglican tradition.
COMPENSATION: The salary range is $13,500 to $15,500 annually. Two paid vacation Sundays will be provided annually, not to include the Lent/Easter or Advent/Christmas cycles.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: As a vital contributor to the overall ministry of St. Thomas, the Music Director will fulfill the following responsibilities:
1. Collaborates with the Rector, select the repertoire of music and voluntaries to call the congregation to worship, enhance the worship services (e.g. Holy Eucharist and Morning Prayer, Easter and Christmas services), and maintain the standards of liturgical music following the Episcopal/Anglican tradition.
2. Is required to complete, within three months of employment, an online program for sexual abuse prevention entitled, “Safeguarding God’s Children.” (See www.safeguardingonline.org)
3. Serves as organist for the Sunday services and for Easter, Christmas Eve and selected Holy Week services.
4. Rehearses, prepares, and practices for worship services by being given full access to the church building and use of musical instruments.
5. Promotes and enhances St. Thomas and its ministry through music.
6. Develops and maintains an up-to-date list of competent substitute organists to fill in for vacations, illness, and unplanned absences, and arranges for a substitute organist.
7. Is given the opportunity to provide music at weddings and funerals requiring organ music within the church. Is individually compensated for these services.
8. Purchases music and related supplies within budget allocations. Administers and cares for the music library, instruments, and other materials related to the music programs of the church. Schedules regular maintenance of the organ, notifying the Rector if non-routine repairs are recommended.
9. Dependent on the future needs of the parish, the Music Director, in collaboration with the Rector, may be invited to propose and plan several choral Evensong services and Concert programs throughout the year. Such events will serve as outreach to the community.
11. Engages in the life of St. Thomas, by attending occasional non-music events and learning to know the congregation informally.
12. Performs other duties as requested by the rector.
