St. Philip’s Nursery School seeks an innovative and enthusiastic Director to lead the School in its next chapter as a longstanding early childhood institution in Garrison, NY, based at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in the Highlands. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator, capable of helming the curricular program and guiding the dedicated staff, while working with the entire community (students, staff, parents, and St. Philip’s Church leadership) in assessing, reimagining and enacting future strategic plans for the School. A talented teacher, collaborative manager, and able fundraiser, the Director is the warm and joyful “face” of the School, setting the tone for the School as a welcoming community.

General Responsibilities:

  • Leading school operations:  including recruiting staff and enrolling students for preschool serving two-, three-, and four-year old children in the Philipstown community and surrounding areas.
  • Implementing and refining a newly robust marketing/advertising plan that expands knowledge of the Nursery School and fuels strong enrollment
  • Implementing a developmentally appropriate instructional program, including introducing fresh perspectives and evolving best practices in early childhood education, while preserving the core educational philosophy and traditions that have served the Nursery School well
  • Initiating and participating in fund raising for the school as its advocate and representative
  • Ensuring the safety, health and well-being of all children enrolled in St. Philip’s, as well as the St. Philip’s staff
  • Complying with all local and state regulations

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Recruits and hires staff and provides ongoing supervision, support, and professional development on pedagogy and child development to create an environment of continuing learning; conducts regular staff meetings
  • Evaluates, innovates, and reviews curriculum and program, serving as guide and coach on matters of pedagogy and child development
  • Formulates and manages the school’s annual budget, with Vestry overview, including staff compensation, ensuring that all resources are used efficiently and effectively to support educational goals
  • Leads all aspects of admissions, including parent tours, child interviews, enrollment decisions, as well as student assessment and individual child evaluations. Works with staff to produce year-end evaluations.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents by emails and newsletters and by holding class meetings and parent conferences, working collaboratively with parent leadership
  • Reports regularly to the Vestry leadership and Rector on the financial and operational health of the school
  • Works to ensure that the school is clean, safe, and well maintained, indoors and out, and in compliance with all safety and licensing regulations
  • Communicates with receiving schools regarding kindergarten outplacement and provides school reports to parents and, in a timely way, to ongoing schools

Qualifications and Qualities:

The ideal candidate will offer most or all of the following qualifications and qualities:

  • A master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Certification
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in early childhood education
  • Proven leadership experience: A visionary, and inspiring leader who will bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to the role, including a demonstrated ability to motivate, support and develop a team of teachers.
  • A confident, collaborative, and decisive leader who is comfortable working with the Rector and Vestry leadership of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, promoting healthy discussion and partnership.
  • Interest and commitment to the marketing of and strategic planning for the future of the school, respecting its past and legacy, while implementing well-considered changes to the school
  • Strong listening and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Digital literacy including Bright Wheel, Google Suite, and Social Media
  • The ability to build strong relationships with parents
  • Active participation in fund raising for the school as its advocate and representative
  • The ability and knowledge to ensure that all state and local regulations necessary for the school are met and adhered to, including the exploration into and search for future licensing for and afternoon program or longer hours for the school
  • Working knowledge of NAEYC standards and program accreditation requirements
  • A community builder who is eager to engage with all constituencies and forge strong connections in the larger community within and outside the school and church
  • A solid work ethic, and a can- do attitude.

The mission of St. Philip’s Nursery School, in partnership with St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, is to provide a vibrant and nurturing preschool experience for two, three and four -year old children of our community, encouraging them to be active, confident, curious, and well-prepared for further education and lifelong learning.

St. Philip’s is an active member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools.

St. Philip’s Nursery School was founded in 1960 and is currently in its 60th year of continuous operation as a morning preschool program. Now serving children ages two, three, and four, the Nursery School is housed on two levels in the historic Parish House building of St. Philip’s Church in the Highlands in Garrison, NY.  The school has historically provided many opportunities for children to play and learn together in a mixed-age environment, which provides older children with the opportunity to teach those younger and younger children to enjoy the guidance of an older child. (In fall 2020, each age group is a separate cohort.)

The staff of the Nursery School is a combination of certified teachers with veteran staff experienced with children.  St. Philip’s welcomes and encourages family involvement. A parent committee assists with communication and fundraising.

Each year, St. Philip’s enrolls between 30 and 40 children who attend from two to five days per week. Most graduates of St. Philip’s attend kindergarten at local public and private schools in Garrison, Cold Spring, Highland Falls, and Cortlandt Manor.

St. Philip’s is located in Garrison, which is part of the Town of Philipstown. St. Philip’s enjoys a strong reputation for being nurturing and providing children with an excellent foundation for kindergarten. St. Philip’s also offers beautiful natural spaces for outdoor learning and an age-appropriate playground.

St. Philip’s Nursery School is an outreach program of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and works in partnership with the Rector and Vestry. St. Philip’s Nursery School is currently under the guidance of an interim director. Looking forward, the Vestry is interested in adjusting the traditional model to better serve parents by adding afternoon offerings.
