St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Yardley, Pennsylvania is searching for a creative, collaborative part-time Music Minister to work with our vibrant congregation in developing and expanding our music ministry. St. Andrew’s is known for our love of music and worship, warm community, and social justice outreach programs. Our doors are open 24 hours a day for all who seek a place to pray and our campus is a community meeting place in the heart of Yardley. Music enlivens our worship and we dream of a music ministry that engages more people in the life of our choirs, and uses the gifts, resources, and talents of our church to actively reach out into our wider area. We are searching for a creative music minister to lead us in experimentation as we discern how this ministry is called to grow. We are fortunate to have the resources and flexibility to scale the hours, responsibilities, and scope of the position to the right candidate.
The position has previously been filled by a Music Director working approximately 10-15 hours per week to plan and prepare music for one service a week, while leading our adult and children’s choirs, and playing the organ. We wish seek to maintain our history of musical excellence and actively build up our adult and children’s choirs. In addition, we see great opportunity for the music ministry to expand our offering for kids as we reach out more actively in our local community.
We currently have one weekly service with music (Sundays at 10:15 a.m.) in addition to other special services and events (Holy Week, Christmas, occasional Evensong). Our adult choir and separate junior choir both rehearse on Wednesday evenings, with the junior choir singing one Sunday a month. The adult choir sings on the remaining Sundays and special services.
We seek candidates who are excellent organists as well as choir directors; have a strong familiarity with and love for the Episcopal liturgy as well as different liturgical and musical traditions; a facility with working with both adults and children; and who will work collaboratively with our Rector to support worship through music. Our instruments include a three-manual, 40-rank pipe organ installed in 2011, a harpsichord,and three upright pianos, and an electronic piano. We currently have one weekly service with music (Sundays at 10:15 a.m.) in addition to other special services and events (Holy Week, Christmas, occasional Evensong). Our adult and junior choirs currently rehearse on Wednesday evenings, and at 9 a.m. on Sundays immediately before the 10:15 a.m. service.
Yardley is located 35 minutes northeast of Center City Philadelphia, 25 minutes from Princeton, and 10 minutes from Trenton.
• In consultation with our priest, organize a musical program around the cycle of the church calendar, festivals, and special events. Work together to craft weekly liturgies that reinforce the spiritual lives of our choirs and congregants in a parish that loves music and singing.
• Lead and actively build the Adult Choir, which leads the congregation in worship and provides an anthem each Sunday. The Adult Choir currently rehearses Wednesdays from 7:30-9:00 p.mP.M. and on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. before the service.
• Provide a well-structured and warm environment for the Junior Choir ministry, and actively recruit new members. The Junior Choir currently rehearses Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00 p.m.PM, and sings during worship once a month.
• Expand the music ministry’s impact on our local community, particularly on the life of children. Work with our congregation and Rector to build out our programs and more deeply engage with the wider community.
• Meet with our Rectorpriest to collaborate on liturgical planning approximately twice a month (can be scheduled on Wednesdays to coordinate with choir rehearsals), and with other staff as needed. We also have seasonal meetings to engage and gather ideas for worship from the parish.
• Plan and provide music for additional services and community events throughout the year, as needed (such as Ash Wednesday, community Christmas caroling events, etc.). Other special music events would be scalable to the interests ?of the candidate.
• Provide additional music for weddings and funerals, or secure other musicians to do so, for additional compensation.
• Obtain or hire instrumental or vocal soloists, within the budget, for special occasions. As needed, purchase music and supplies within the budget; oversee the extensive music library.
Hours, Compensation, and Start Date:
The Music Minister is a part-time position (15-20 hours/week), with the responsibilities and average hours able to be scaled for the right candidate. Compensation is approximately $24,000-$28,000 and open to negotiation based on experience, education, and the number of hours worked.
Start date is flexible, with the Music Minister to start no later than mid-August.
