Job Description
The Missioner for Thriving Congregations is a member of the diocesan team under the leadership of the Bishop. The Missioner will be a resource in support of the Diocese of Oregon’s commitment to living into Jesus’ teaching to become the Beloved Community. The Missioner serves congregations in transition and is a resource to clergy who are entering new ministries or seeking a transition. The Missioner will be an evangelist for congregations seeking new expressions of the Episcopal Church in Western Oregon. This is a full-time exempt position reporting directly to the Bishop.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as a resource for congregational development and vitality
  • Supports congregations seeking a new expression of faith in community, including innovative building use, community engagement training, and diaconal engagement in local contexts
  • Provides transition ministry support and guidance to vestries, wardens, and search committees
  • Provides deployment support to clergy seeking new ministries or entering transition
  • Coordinates diocesan consultant network
  • Oversees diocesan and The Episcopal Church required training (i.e. Safe Church, Anti-Racism training, etc.)
  • Works with the Bishop and diocesan committees to execute the strategies and vision of the diocese
  • Represents the Bishop, as needed, on Governing Bodies such as Diocesan Council, COM, Finance committee
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Highly organized; values timeliness and works with schedules as well as pastoral emergencies
  • Possesses healthy boundaries with respect to conflict management, reconciliation, and confidentiality
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in Episcopal governance and Canon law
  • Creative and innovative teacher/trainer possessing the capacity to develop programs, encourage adaptive discipleship, and stimulate healthy spiritual communities
  • Hopeful and thoughtful in holding others accountable as well as oneself

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master of Divinity, master’s degree in theology, or equivalent training
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in The Episcopal Church
  • Must have valid driver’s license, access to transportation, and insurance to mandated state requirements
  • Spanish language desirable
