Job Description
Good Samaritan Episcopal Church, located near the University of California San Diego (UCSD), is seeking to hire a full-time Minister of Formation. Good Samaritan is a blend of ancient tradition and fresh, contemporary expressions of Christianity, especially in our music. We are scientists, social workers, artists, moms and dads, straight, gay, professors, students, babysitters, teachers, military, pacifist, nurses and doctors, retired, and underemployed. We are progressive and inclusive. We pray the ancient creeds, and we apply them to today’s issues. Our Mission is to be the gospel of Christ by holding hands, reaching out to our neighbors and striving to love and be loved.

The Minister of Formation Will:

• be a visionary with a passion for life in the community and not merely an administrator
• direct the parish’s development of Christian faith in people of all ages by helping to organize and lead educational programs, such as Sunday school, youth group events, family nights, retreats, pilgrimages, worship experiences, mission trips, and other community-building offerings
• focus mainly on building up the “next generation” of the parish, and bring a creative and innovative approach that is deeply grounded in the spiritual life in Christ, the social realities of contemporary life, and the cultural richness and diversity of San Diego, such as its Latino and Asian communities
• draw on a wide range of resources and opportunities in the parish and surrounding community, serving as an imaginative presence who works in partnership with other staff, parishioners, and the diocesan Youth Collaborative
• cultivate strong relationships with parishioners, families, youth and ministry partners while working collegially with other staff and volunteer leaders
• assist the Rector and Music Director in planning worship that is experientially rich, inclusive of all ages, and intellectually challenging
• may preach regularly, and serve in other worship capacities as appropriate
• report to the Rector (Senior Pastor) and work collaboratively with the Rector

Ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree, theological degree or significant theological formation; at least 3-5 years’ experience working in a congregational setting with a variety of ages (paid or volunteer), within a liturgical tradition that need not necessarily be Episcopal, and/or experience in classroom teaching. The Minister of Formation should be comfortable working with teams of volunteers, and be collaborative in spirit, spiritually grounded, and eager to try new ideas. The Minister should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a passion for working with children and youth. The Minister may be either lay or ordained. Spanish is a plus.
