Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church in Glen Burnie, MD is looking for a director of music. The candidate should possess good organ skills as well as leadership experience in conducting adult and children’s choirs. We also have a beloved hand-bell choir, and a full set of well-maintained hand bells. While experience with hand-bell repertoire and pedagogy are desirable, we are also willing to provide continuing education to develop good hand-bell ringing skills for people who are otherwise musically qualified for this position, though slim on hand bell experience. The candidate must either have familiarity with Episcopal liturgy or willingness to learn how we select music based upon the liturgical calendar and how we use it in worship.
The position is part time and salaried, approximately 10-12 hours per week September through May, which includes personal practice time. The choirs do not rehearse in the summer months, though the music director is expected to provide ad hoc music for offertory in addition to the service music. Actual hours here are ~5-5.5 hrs/wk. During the week before Easter there are other service for which music is required. Weddings, funerals and other special occasions are considered extra side work and will be compensated in addition to the competitive salary (commensurate with experience) we offer. We also offer four weeks of paid vacation each year.
Our church is small (holds about 210 people) and possesses wonderful acoustics, making it a good place for holding concerts when it is not in use for worship on Sunday mornings. Our organ is a two manual Rodgers, and we also have two pianos, one in the chancel and another in the choir room.
