Status: Part-time Salary & vacation: upwards from $22,000 negotiable depending on experience.
Job Summary: Provide organ and piano accompaniment and special music for all Sunday liturgical worship, Lenten and festival services. Select music and conduct weekly choir rehearsals.
Provide organ/piano music for Sunday liturgical services (8:00 AM at Christ Church and 10:30 AM at Kingston Chapel — weekly attendance averaged 50+ at each service), and for other non-Sunday festival services: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, etc.
Serve as Adult Choir leader and accompanist at all Adult Choir functions and rehearsals.
Choose appropriate organ/piano music for anthems, preludes and postludes in cooperation with the Rector.
Accompany other choirs and choral and instrumental ensembles as needed and have first option to play for all weddings and funerals held at the church.
Maintain professional competency by lessons, practicing, performing, attending music conferences and reading professional journals.
Oversee maintenance of the organs.
Proficiency and requisite training in both organ and piano at an appropriate level for our music program; experience in leading congregational singing; experience in choir and solo accompaniment; familiarity with hymns and repertoire for the church year, weddings and funerals. Applicants should be able to engage people positively; openly accept criticism as well as praise; productively engage and resolve interpersonal conflict. Applicant should be a self-starter who wants to build a good music program and explore all that is possible to grow such a program.
Experience: Organ/keyboard playing: 4 years (Preferred)
Education: Bachelor’s (Preferred)
Kingston Parish (Episcopal) was founded ca. 1650. Mathews is 14 miles from Gloucester Court House and about 40 minutes drive from Yorktown. At 8 AM we worship at Christ Church (built 1700s, rebuilt 1904, Rite I, has a two-manual 20-rank Zimmer Co. op. 495 hybrid organ with Walker Technical Company digital voices) and at 10:30 AM worship at the Parish House, Kingston Chapel, Rite II (Rodgers 805 two-manual 36-rank digital organ and Steinway baby grand piano). Pre-pandemic the choir practices were Thursdays from 3 PM to 5 PM at Christ Church and the choir sang alternately at one service each week.
