Accountable to: Church/Executive Council, Senior Pastor, and Worship and Music Committee Chair
Status: Part time (20-25 hours/week)

Purpose: The Director of Music Ministry will develop and lead the music ministry at Trinity, in consultation with the pastor and other team leaders, in a way that is consistent with the mission, values and theology of the church. Serving as lead pianist for worship, the Director of Music Ministry will be expected to accompany the liturgy, direct the vocal and handbell choirs, provide music for additional services as required (i.e. seasonal holy days, weddings, funerals, etc.) and integrate musical skills and creativity into the nature and structure of the liturgy. The Director of Music Ministry will have an understanding of acoustics in liturgical spaces, as well as an understanding of sound and projection equipment in worship.

Job Responsibilities
• Select and plan music for worship services, including preludes, introits, postludes and musical anthems and accompaniment
• Work with Senior Pastor on hymn and song selection for congregational singing, and working with Senior Pastor and staff on developing and editing worship materials
• Accompany funerals, memorial services, weddings and other special services as available. Arrange for a substitute musician/pianist when not able to be present
• Work closely with the Senior Pastor and Worship and Music Committee in planning and developing the nature and structure of liturgy. Familiarity with Lutheran and Catholic liturgies, as well as contemporary styles of worship (or a willingness to learn) is needed.

• Recruit, equip, motivate, mentor and supervise vocal and bell choirs, soloists and musicians so that they might grow and express their talents and spiritual gifts. These choirs may include: adult choir, contemporary praise singers, bell choir and children’s choir. Teach and rehearse choirs weekly from September – May
• Ensure the music library of the church is organized and well maintained. Purchase new materials as required. Equip and train volunteers as needed
• Obtain, renew and document all licensing and copyrights to music and video used by Trinity
• Oversee the tuning, maintenance and care of the parish instruments and sound board; manage relationships with external vendors such as piano tuners and organ technicians
• Work as part of a staff team, including ministry team leaders, communicating faithfully with the Senior Pastor and staff through participation and attendance in monthly staff meetings, monthly worship and music committee meetings, as well as written monthly reports to Church Council
• Assist the Worship and Music team and Senior Pastor in budget planning. Be a faithful steward of Trinity’s resources by adhering to the music ministry budget and following proper procedures for spending requests (i.e. music, vocalists, instruments, etc.)
• Participate in the life and ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church
• On an ongoing basis, work with the Senior Pastor on investing in the development of skills to enhance work
• Be aware of and comply with Trinity’s employee policies as documented in the employee handbook
• Other duties as assigned

Education, Skills and Abilities:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Music or Theology helpful. 3-5 years of experience as a Music Director in a church setting, or equivalent music experience is desired
• Accomplished pianist and ability to read music; experience playing organ is a plus
• Basic knowledge of keyboard techniques, liturgical service structure, transposition and choral conducting
• Strong ability to work collaboratively with staff, committees and volunteers in a dynamic environment and to respond positively even when demands come from multiple angles or in a season of high pressure. Ability to work with and gain support from the congregation, volunteers and ministry teams
• Positive role model for Christian faith and witness
• Good time management and organizational skills
• Experience with or willingness to learn technical aspects for worship: i.e. sound boards, theater lights, video editing, etc.
• Demonstrable PC skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and internet. Experience with Microsoft Publisher helpful
• Ability to lift handbell cases and items up to 50lbs may be necessary
• Must have own transportation to work location
• Successful completion of required background checks/trainings, including:
o Criminal Record Check
o Child Abuse Clearance Check
o State mandated trainings

Compensation: Salary is negotiable, and will be based on skills
