Job Description
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in New Canaan, CT seeks to call a new Director of Music Ministry.

St. Mark’s is a faith-filled, dynamic, resourced congregation that loves sacred music. We seek to call a Director of Music Ministry to bring our music ministry to the next level. We seek an experienced church musician, joyful person of faith, and leader with a heart for inspiring people through sacred music. We desire an excellent choral conductor who is a skilled teacher, gifted organist, and strong administrator; someone who has creative vision and an entrepreneurial spirit who enjoys working in collaboration with clergy, staff, and parishioners of all ages. We look forward to getting to know your particular gifts.

The liturgy at St. Mark’s follows the Book of Common Prayer and falls into the broad Episcopal Church tradition. There are three Sunday services: 8AM Eucharist (Rite I); 10AM Eucharist (Rite II) with choir; contemplative 5PM Eucharist (no music).

St. Mark’s has a strong musical history grounded in the Anglican tradition. We have an Adult Choir of roughly 30 volunteer members and 4 paid section leaders, two children’s choirs, and a hand bell choir. In past years, we have enjoyed a Youth Choir and a Taize service. We celebrate Evensong on average three times per year and perform selected parts of Handel’s Messiah in early December.

Built in 1961, St. Mark’s is a mid-century modern building with a nave soaring to 48 feet. It seats 650 people and has wonderful musical acoustics. Our three-manual, five-division pipe organ was built by Austin Organs Inc., of Hartford, Connecticut in 1961 and substantially renovated and re-voiced in 2013.

We are a faithful, energetic parish of 1,400 members (300 ASA, plus live stream audience) in southwest Connecticut, 42 miles from New York, with Metro-North commuter train within walking distance.
