Job Description
Established in 1940 as a merger of two congregations, Grace-St. Luke’s Church is a vibrant Episcopal community of more than 550 households in Midtown Memphis with a rich choral program grounded in traditional Anglican/Episcopal liturgy. The Grace-St. Luke’s Choir, adult ensemble of more than 25 members (volunteers and section leaders), supports weekly Sunday worship, feast days, and occasional services of Choral Evensong. Children’s choirs (Canterbury, St. Cecilia) offer music occasionally between fall and spring. Significant to the support of music at Grace-St. Luke’s are the chancel organ (Schantz, 2000, Opus 2175, 3 manuals, 45 stops, 58 ranks), balcony antiphonal organ (Nichols & Simpson, 2017, 2 manuals, 11 stops, 13 ranks), guest instrumentalists, and a deep clergy commitment to broad liturgy with excellent music.

Grace-St. Luke’s Parish life includes active formation programs for children, youth, and adults, including a popular parish hall forum of guest presenters and occasional small group events; weekly and seasonal fellowship offerings; two internal outreach programs plus partnerships with local service agencies; Grace-St. Luke’s School, a pre-kindergarten to eighth grade school of approximately 500 children (chapel three days per week in the nave and the pre-school activity center room); and the annual Belvedere Chamber Music Festival, which performs 20th and 21st century masterpieces, new works, and offers educational opportunities for young composers and performers.

A popular candidate will be an accomplished organist, master’s degree preferred, with superior skills as a worship service player, improviser, and solo organist. Conducting skills required and experience in music education for children is highly desired. Solid administrative, personnel, and organizational management skills are essential. Appreciation for and/or talent in a broad repertoire of genres for alternative contemplative worship offerings is desired. The full-time Director of Music is supported primarily by the part-time Assistant Organist and Choirmaster.
