|The Director of Music is a significant ministry in the spiritual life of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral. This is a dual appointment as the Director of Music for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral and the Music Instructor at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Harrisburg, PA. The Director of Music reports directly to the Dean of the Cathedral.
It shall be the responsibility of the Director of Music, in direct consultation with the clergy of the Cathedral, to assist the community of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the wider diocese in their worship, to the glory of God. The Director of Music will select, prepare and present appropriate liturgical and worship music (hymns, anthems, psalm settings, etc.). The Director of Music is also responsible for the preparation and presence of a choir for Cathedral services. This will include the development of a children’s choir. The Director of Music shall also teach in St. Stephen’s Episcopal School two days a week.
Desired attributes: The Director of Music must have a collaborative attitude and broad vision, lifting up music in our community life for the glory of God. The ability and willingness to work with flexibility and in teams, especially with Cathedral and Diocesan clergy, school staff, and families, is essential. The Director of Music needs to be a teacher and producer. The person must have the ability to interact with many different communities in the diocese, including other faith traditions, the cathedral parish, and the school.
The job requires a Bachelor’s degree, with teaching experience preferred. A Master’s degree is desirable but not required. Core competencies include reading music, playing the organ and ability to direct and teach children and lead adult and children’s choirs
