Who we are

St. John’s Norwood in Bethesda – Chevy Chase, MD is a thriving, progressive, and welcoming Episcopal Church with an average Sunday attendance of 350. Our ministry revolves around four core commitments: relevant worship, education and spiritual maturity, building authentic and meaningful community, and making a difference in the lives of people both within our church family, as well as in the wider community, nation, and world. A significant portion of our church community is families with children. And we are looking to build on our cherished and long-standing tradition of providing a nurturing Christian environment and spiritual education for our children and teens as well as providing educational and formational support for their parents.

What we are looking for

We are seeking to hire a Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry (CYF) who will nurture and support the health and spiritual formation of our young people and their families including the primary responsibility of directing our Sunday morning children & teen educational hour (Church School). The Director for CYF will work closely with the
Rector to provide excellent age-appropriate education and formation for our Children and youth, and will be supported by a dedicated part time Assistant for CYF. The Director of CYF is expected to be present for Sunday morning services and will be the primary staff person responsible for our Sunday programs for children, youth and families.

Duties and Responsibilities

Vision and Management
• Collaborate with Rector on CYF vision and goals.
• Direct CYF program and ensure a healthy and safe environment for our children.
• Supervise CYF Assistant, youth group leader, and nursery staff.
• Collaborate with Director of Music on relevant activities
• Attend weekly staff meetings.

Church School
• Welcome and actively engage new families, connecting young people to the church school.
• Recruit, train, and provide support to Church School teachers.
• Select or design curricula for all age levels consistent with St. John’s values & beliefs.
• Guide and support Journey 2 Adulthood class including leading biennial pilgrimage
• Communicate effectively the scope and sequence for all curricula to parents and teachers.
• Teach classes, as needed.

Formation and Education for Families
• Provide educational programs for parents to support them in their parenting.
• Provide regular opportunities for meaningful community service for children & youth
• Connect church school parents to each other – including establishing small groups – for community building and ongoing support.

• Support children and youth engagement and participation in worship.
• Support Children’s Chapel during the 9am service.

• Keep the Church School visible to the rest of the congregation.
• Contribute monthly articles about the Church School in our online newsletter.
• Ensure that the Church School bulletin board is maintained with recent pictures and announcements.

• Warm, welcoming, supportive, innovative, open, flexible and playful
• Demonstrated organizational skills
• Expertise in child development (cognitive, moral, and faith development), age appropriate Christian education for children and youth
• Ability to teach and lead sessions with children and youth as well as teach and lead volunteers
• Ability to train, supervise and support both staff and volunteers
• Experience in administration and in managing a budget
