Canon for Formation and Transition Ministry – Diocese of Los Angeles

The Diocese of Los Angeles is seeking an experienced priest, who is creative and energized, to serve as a senior member of the bishop’s staff. The person called to this position will work with both clergy and lay leaders in all the congregations and ministries of the diocese.

Serve as Chair of the department, currently comprised of the Associate for Formation and Transition Ministry and the Administrative Assistant for Formation and Transition Ministry. The Canon has direct oversight of all parish search processes, instructing and directing search committees and vestries throughout their time of transition.
Maintaining files of qualified candidates for possible call when openings become available in parishes, missions and other ministerial opportunities. Gathering pertinent information on possible candidates including; background checks, “Red Flag” checks; OTM’s, and letters of interest.

This staff member has traditionally served as a Title IV Intake Officer and a member of the Diocesan Reference Panel.

Oversight of the Diocesan Discernment Process for lay and ordained ministries in direct consultation with the Bishop’s Office and the Commission on Ministry. Ongoing support of the Commission on Ministry and Consultation for the planning and execution of the diocesan Annual Clergy Conference. Convener, planner and facilitator for the various FreshStart programs; Newly Ordained, New-to-Cure, Deacons, and Laity.

Maintain regular interaction and ongoing dialogue with other Province VII DTM’s and across all provinces.

The Canon for Formation and Transition Ministry will work under the direction of the Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor 7th Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, and The Rev. Canon Melissa McCarthy, Canon to the Ordinary, and will work as a senior member of Diocesan Staff. The Canon’s work will be based at St. Paul’s Commons, located in Los Angeles, CA, and will include regular travel across the Diocese. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
