Digital Media Production Manager – Job Posting

St. Michael’s Church, a progressive and diverse Episcopal Church at 99th and Amsterdam on the Upper West Side, seeks to hire a part-time Digital Media Production Manager.

St. Michael’s is a 200+ year old Episcopal Church in Manhattan. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic approximately 200 people attended our 10 am Sunday service weekly. Our diverse membership range across income levels, races and age – from young adults to young families to parishioners well into their 90s. Prior to March 2020, we made audio recordings of sermons available on our website, and very occasionally, a video produced by volunteers.

Since being prohibited from holding in-person gatherings, we have distributed a pre-recorded service via three channels simultaneously on Sundays at 10am: Zoom webinar, Facebook Live and through the telephone (call-in to Zoom). Our current pre-recorded services are being produced by our Choirmaster/Music Director on an interim basis. We aim to augment our digital capabilities, develop them in a sustained manner and maximize their impact through a dedicated Digital Media Production Manager.

As New York City starts to allow small in-person gatherings, we seek to evolve our services to operate within their allowable constraints for both legal and health reasons. Even when the City permits gatherings of 50 to 100 people or greater, we seek to expand and sustain our ability to livestream our Sunday services, moving to a more hybrid worship model. This capability will allow us to reach a wider audience: parishioners who are homebound, those with occasional or ongoing 10 am commitments, those temporarily or permanently out of town, visitors and others.

Beyond the 10 am Sunday service, St. Michael’s currently hosts virtual versions of live programming via Zoom. At present this includes:

  • Prayer services
    • Morning (Monday-Saturday)
    • Noonday (Monday-Friday)
    • Compline / night prayers (Monday-Friday)
  • Adult education classes
    • Sunday morning
    • Wednesday evening
  • Children and youth sessions
    • Middle school (Sunday afternoon)
    • High school (Sunday afternoon)
    • Godly Play (ages 3-12; Sunday and Wednesday afternoons)

Pre-pandemic, we also conducted two other in-person Sunday services at 7:45 am and 6 pm.

Our Need

The Digital Media Production Manager will be responsible for defining the design and production requirements for our 10 am Sunday service as well as its actual production. Because the allowable gathering sizes will start small and gradually increase, we expect the production requirements to evolve.

The Digital Media Production Manager will have the latitude to define equipment requirements and scale up production and livestreaming of the 10 am service across pandemic re-start phases and beyond. For illustrative purposes only, three potential phases could include:

  • Phase 1: 10 people (key service participants only in person)
  • Phase 2: 50 people (service participants plus small congregation, plus livestreaming)
  • Phase 3: Larger gatherings allowed, livestreaming remains

While we prefer to have the majority of the service delivered live, the Digital Media Production Manager can help define ways to augment livestreamed content with pre-recorded material, where appropriate.

Although Sunday worship will be the Digital Media Production Manager’s primary focus, they are expected to make an impact in other areas beyond the 10 am Sunday service. This position will allow them to impact the digital presence of St. Michael’s Church in areas including but not limited to our website, social media and email, adult and child/youth education, sacraments (e.g., weddings and baptisms) and community/race and gender equality/social justice causes.
