Job Description
St. Stephen’s Church in Richmond, Virginia, is a large, vibrant Episcopal church, deeply involved in the community and the world. With both traditional and innovative liturgies; thriving outreach ministries small group ministries and engaging educational offerings; and a reputation as an open “village green” and sacred space for all people, St. Stephen’s Church provides clergy and lay professionals with an exciting opportunity to be part of a healthy community steeped in Anglican tradition and actively imagining the church of the future. Founded in 1911, St. Stephen’s has experienced significant growth over the years and is currently a worshipping community of 4,700. Average Sunday attendance is 1,200 at five services; services are also held on weekdays and Saturdays.

A major priority for St. Stephen’s Church is effective communication within and beyond the parish. A full-time communications director oversees a wide variety of electronic and print communications designed to appeal not only to parishioners but to those beyond the parish.

The parish seeks a full-time colleague to work with the director on all aspects of communication, with particular emphasis on videography, live streaming, still photography, social media, and other areas.

Specific areas of responsibility include:

Photography, videography, and video editing

Photograph and record parish events and services for use on Web site, Vimeo, social media, and various print publications

Audio visual ministry

Service as liaison with parish administrator and AV vendor for recording and live streaming services and events; initiate a podcasting ministry

Social media

Work with communications director on social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Vimeo, with general messages as well as those for targeted audiences such as young adults, farmers market patrons, and others.

Web site maintenance

Work with communications director to make regular updates to parish Web site, keeping content current, refreshing photography and graphics, and ensuring that messages are consistent across platforms

Email newsletters

Work with communications director and other staff on targeted email newsletters, using best practices for retention and growth of email lists

Staff collaboration and consistency

In cooperation with communications director, support and advise ministry teams on best practices in not-for-profit social media, email marketing, and web presence, and ensure consistency in branding and messaging by the various ministries


Collect, interpret and report analytics measuring engagement with Web site, social media platforms, email, and video


Writing, and assisting with editing and proofing copy for print publications


The ideal candidate will have

  • Videography and video editing skills
  • Photography skills
  • Adobe Creative Suite proficiency
  • Knowledge/experience in live streaming
  • Skills in social media strategy and execution
  • Writing skills
  • Knowledge of analytics

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or other related discipline preferred.

Some evening and weekend work will be required.
