|Durham Cathedral: the Shrine of St Cuthbert
The Bishop of Durham and the Chapter of Durham Cathedral are looking for an influential and inspirational Canon Pastor who will play a vital and strategic role in enhancing the governance, leadership and liturgical life of the Cathedral.
At ‘the best Cathedral on planet earth’ we are seeking a colleague who will care for and grow our regular worshippers in faith and in numbers; oversee the work of our Education (Learning & Outreach) and Library & Collections teams; and head up student ministry at the Cathedral which founded Durham University.
Durham Cathedral is admired across the world for its outstanding architecture and beautiful landscape setting, often cited as the finest Romanesque church in Europe. The celebrated vista of the Castle and Cathedral set high on a wooded peninsula is as unforgettable as the matchless interior of this wonderful building. It is not surprising that the Durham World Heritage Site was one of the first in the UK to be inscribed by UNESCO in 1986.
It is not only heritage and landscape that touches so many people. There are few places in England that are more imbued with the spirit of the saints, in Durham’s case the holy men and women of the Anglo-Saxon North. St Cuthbert’s Shrine is the spiritual heart of the Cathedral, and the shrine of the Venerable Bede is equally honoured.
You will possess proven theological, strategic and leadership capability and will be passionate about our core purpose, committed to enabling the whole Cathedral community to live our values, deliver our strategic objectives and fulfil our vision.
As a member of Chapter you will draw upon your substantial experience of working at Board level and will work collaboratively with colleagues to build upon the foundations already laid in corporate governance, financial sustainability and project management.
As part of a community with 176 staff and 800 volunteers, you will thrive on working closely with a talented management team of professionals in their own field. You will use your successful track record of strategic and operational leadership, complemented by your personal skills and presence, to engage, influence and inspire those with whom you share ministry. With your energy and resilience you will apply the experience that you have gained as an experienced pastor to work in partnership with relevant agencies; grow our regular worshippers in faith and in numbers; lead our Education (Learning & Outreach) and Library & Collections teams; and work with colleagues to foster ministry among Durham’s student community.
