Job Description
Position Description: the Canon for Mission Communications & Media is responsible for overseeing and implementing the strategic use of communication and media to advance ECCT’s participation in God’s Mission in a new missional age. This position reports to the Bishop Diocesan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Communication and social media support for bishops, canons, administrators, Region missionaries and other ECCT entities
a) Staff communication and media support for major initiatives
b) Other ECCT communication and media support in cooperation with the Digital Storyteller, including:
• Regions, Ministry Networks, other organizations as appropriate
• Parishes, as appropriate
• Convene and serve as member of Digital Ministry Network

News, media releases, media relations
a) Internal news reporting – Identify news stories or opportunities, interview and report in text and/or video, publish, promote
b) External media relations – Identify opportunities, craft strategies, pitch stories, follow up; for crisis, ensure statement is crafted, send to media outlets, be prepared to answer media questions, and manage handoff to spokesperson; and promote any resulting coverage internally
c) Assist bishops with the crafting of messages, press releases, pastoral support, and crisis communications

Digital Ministry
a) ECCT Website: Provide and oversee ECCT website/s
• Domains and hosting
• Development, ongoing redevelopment of primary website (includes timing, concept, buy-in and negotiation, contracting and fulfilment, for content, modules, other features)
• Maintenance, upgrades, updates of content and features
• Updates, additions, edits to content (text, image, etc.)
• Other website creation as determined
b) Social media: Provide and oversee social media content and engagement
• Ongoing strategies and implementation of ECCT social media both content, creation, and engagement
• Post, strategize and assign posts, and supervise the Digital Storyteller for content, including text, links, video, images, promotions, events, etc. on Facebook and Twitter; also on existing and emerging social media sites (e.g., Instagram, Pinterest, etc.)
• Add new media as appropriate to support ongoing community engagement
• Engage with existing content: share/like/retweet/comment/reply
• Oversee ad buys, media calendar, analytical stats
• Purchase other communication and media services as needed; maintain contracts, train as necessary, determine use and implement; collaborate with others on products and services
c) eNewsletter: write and oversee regular and special occasion email communication to audiences that share announcements invitations, information, and news and may include text, images, video, social media, and more
• Produce regular newsletter which currently include weekly newsletter that reaches a broad audience, monthly clergy eNewsletter for all ECCT clergy and bi-monthly parish admin & finance eNewsletter for lay and ordained parish leaders
• Manage contacts and lists
• Revise newsletters’ content, focus, and schedule, or, create new newsletters, to meet current needs and interests
• Reformat letters and announcements to be sent electronically
• Oversee contract with service provider; upgrade/change as necessary

Other communication & media
a) Editor of annual print publication (currently known as CRUX): Provide an annual, or semi-annual, print magazine for every Episcopal household at least once a year
o Serve as general editor, as well as contributor, oversee assignments, content, editorial, design, art, and production, distribution, and post-production
b) Storytelling: Supervise the work of Digital Storyteller including strategizing and helping to edit, resource, and promote stories.
c) Provide communication support for the ECCT Annual Convention: work with onsite communication tech, coordinate slide presentation content, record annual address, update the website, produce a daily newsletter, etc.
d) Provide communication support for ECCT at General Convention: daily communications to subscribers, ECCT website and social media updates, social media, online galleries and channels, etc.
e) Membership in Episcopal Communicators and participation in their annual conference.

• Shared commitment to the Mission of God as interpreted by the Episcopal Church in Connecticut
• Familiarity with The Episcopal Church, membership in The Episcopal Church preferred
• Advanced skills and demonstrated experience in social media, digital literacy, demographic and sociological impact, journalism, communication, marketing, public relations, strategic communications planning, and analytics
• Able to create and edit written and visual content; as well as curate, sift, compile, and prioritize audience-focused content
• Excellent writing skills; able to curate and craft messages quickly and under pressure
• Ability to perform several tasks concurrently, with excellent time management and organizational skills
• Good team player
• Creative, capable; can take action quickly
• Ability to align work with organization’s values and message
• Persistent and flexible
• Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-moving environment
