Job Location

Job Description
Founded in 1842, the Chapel of the Cross is an Episcopal parish in Chapel Hill, North Carolina opening onto the campus of the University of North Carolina, the nation’s first public university (1795) with nearly 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students.  With about 2000 members, the parish is a vibrant community of faith where worship, university ministry, and outreach are central to our identity.  University ministry can be traced back to the parish’s founding and is a strategic priority of the Diocese of North Carolina.  There is a strong foundation in university ministry in this context, particularly in relationship to undergraduates.  We seek an individual who will build on this foundation and flesh out new relationships with additional aspects of university life in collaboration with broader community partners.

The priest who joins our staff as an Associate Rector reports to the Rector and will make a significant contribution to the clergy team and professional staff at the Chapel of the Cross.  This individual will also take on leadership in the Diocese of North Carolina through active participation in the Committee on Ministry in Higher Education.  The Associate Rector for University Ministry will share in the priestly arts, helping create a place of transformation to form disciples for Jesus Christ. The role will include things like: continuing and building up the undergraduate campus ministry (which has an average of 30 students weekly in attendance) and collaborating with other undergraduate, interfaith campus ministry partners; continuing administration of a Lilly Grant for Vocational Discernment; care for university staff (active and retired) and their families; collaboration with other local Episcopal congregations to bring all of our gifts to bear on the campus; imagining new opportunities for graduate student fellowship; creating relationships with the many graduate and professional schools at the University and as well as the Campus Center for Social Justice (The Y).  This is a job for someone who loves God, loves being a priest, loves the church, has an appetite to build ministry scaffolding that does not yet exist and nurture growth, is willing to try and change course, appreciates working with students in a rigorous academic environment, and seeks to be an agent of change and engagement.

Our ideal candidate is someone who has ordained leadership experience in the Episcopal Church, strong communication skills, loves people, practices self-care, is a self-starter, and gets energy from collaboration and has relatable experience in university ministry. This position offers full-time compensation and benefits and is designed for someone who wants to come and invest in the community and serve with us.
