Job Description
At St. John’s Church, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world.

This historic and vibrant parish located on Black Lives Matter Plaza and across from the White House in the heart of our nation’s capital seeks a full-time priest to collaborate with the rector, staff, and parishioners in carrying out the parish’s mission, ministry, and vision.

St. John’s has an average Sunday attendance of 450 across three services (pre-pandemic), and a staff of 14, including two full-time priests and one part-time priest.  We are committed to racial justice and healing, and we seek to be a beacon of grace to our city and beyond. Our worship style is grounded in the Book of Common Prayer, and we are well-known for the high quality of preaching and our music program, comprised of both professional and volunteer choirs.

Duties will include:

Sharing in leading worship, preaching and the administration of the sacraments with the rector and assisting priest;

Sharing in the pastoral care of the congregation; and

Sharing in planning, organization and visioning for the staff team and the parish.

A portfolio of specific areas of responsibility will be assigned by the rector depending on gifts, calling, and experience, but the following areas are expected to be the primary focus.

  • With the support of the Outreach Committee, provide oversight of all outreach activities.
  • Coordinate the Latrobe Young Adult Fellowship.
  • With the support of the Pastoral Care Committee, coordinate parish-wide pastoral care initiatives.
  • Supervise the Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator (lay) to ensure high quality and engaging worship and programs are offered.

Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years of parish experience (preferably in an urban setting), a proven track record of effective preaching, a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, a passion for pastoral care, an ability to work as a team member, and a good sense of humor.
