Job Description
The Associate Rector will lead in all manner of sacramental ministry, preaching, teaching, and equipping, with a special focus on the pastoral and formational needs of newcomers and their incorporation into the parish’s life of worship, fellowship, and ministry. He or she will work closely with the rector and the parish staff in living into the mission of St. John’s Episcopal Church:

Nurturing faith, inspiring hope, and growing in love as we worship God, make disciples, and serve East Dallas and the world.

Specific responsibilities


  • Minister at Saturday evening and Sunday Eucharists, preaching in a rotation every three to four weeks
  • Minister at weekday Eucharists or Morning Prayer, as assigned
  • Assist, officiate, and preach at weddings and burials as assigned
  • Assist, officiate, and preach at St. John’s school chapel on occasion

Pastoral Care

  • Visit and administer Holy Communion to parishioners who are sick, shut-in, in the hospital or reside in health care facilities
  • Provide pastoral care, counseling, and direction as assigned
  • Track and make contact with newcomers who visit the church
  • Connect with young families and aid their assimilation into the congregation

Teaching and Discipleship

  • Teach during the Sunday School year (September through May) on subjects of the your choosing
  • Oversee lay teachers and develop the Christian Formation class schedule
  • Develop discipleship opportunities for young families and newcomers


  • Oversee and organize the youth ministry program
  • Develop and disciple a team of adult leaders for youth ministry
  • Provide pastoral care to children and youth


  • Attend weekly staff meeting (Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.)
  • Attend weekly meetings with the rector
  • Chair or serve on committees or task forces as may be assigned
  • Attend diocesan meetings and conventions
  • 6-week, 3- month, 6-month, and 1-year reviews with the rector
