FULL TIME PARISH STAFF POSITION

St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, Sudbury, Massachusetts

TITLE:
Associate for Youth Formation and Parish Administration; (if ordained or in process) or
Director of Youth Formation and Parish Administration (if lay and not ordained)

REPORTS TO: Rector

HOURS: 40 hours/week; (Sun. – Thurs., plus holidays, and some evenings)

COMPENSATION: Competitive Salary; 403(b) or CPG Pension; Medical Insurance; PTO

DESCRIPTION: St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, located in Sudbury, MA (metro-west greater Boston) and part of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, is a suburban parish that values cultivating community where members are known, loved, and supported in their growth as disciples of Jesus Christ through worship, Christian formation, service, and community. St. Elizabeth’s seeks to hire one full-time person, to oversee two part-time areas of parish ministry: Youth Faith Formation (ages 3-18), and Parish Administration. Together with the rector, they will tend to both the spiritual and administrative needs of a growing parish vested in making a difference in the world.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, is approachable, has the organizational skills for administration, and finds joy in working with youth and families in a community of faith. The right candidate will be committed to forming followers of Jesus Christ in ways consistent with the Baptismal Covenant and the overall ethos of the Episcopal Church. This is an ideal position for someone newly ordained (or in the ordination process) as a deacon or presbyter in TEC (or close communion partner); or a lay person who feels called to the ministry of the lay and wants to serve the church in a very specific way, and has the gifts to support these two areas of ministry. A comprehensive criminal background check and compliance with Safeguarding policies and other policies of TEC, the Diocese of Massachusetts, and St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church are required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching youth/supporting teachers; and experience as an administrative assistant
  • Undergraduate degree or higher
  • Understanding of (or a willingness to understand) the Episcopal faith tradition
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with parishioners effectively
  • Ability to plan, delegate, and work with little supervision; self-starting
  • Resourceful, reliable, and a non-anxious presence in emergency or crisis situations
  • Careful attention to discrete and confidential pastoral matters
  • Willingness to learn new web-based technologies, creative with use of social media
  • Sharp eye for proof reading orders of worship, and electronic parish communications

FORMATION DUTIES

  • Plan and help implement Formation Programs that engage body, mind, and spirit for youth ages 3-18; which includes a mixture of curriculum, fellowship, and service
  • Inspire current formation teachers in their spiritual lives, and develop more teachers
  • Develop and co-teach interactive yearly Youth Confirmation program
  • Work with the rector to provide pastoral care to families in need
  • Lead children’s worship on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, & Christmas Eve
  • Maintain the “busy bags” and other religious coloring sheets for children to use in church
  • Work with the rector to help develop meaningful ways for youth to be engaged in worship
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, yearly Vestry retreat, annual parish meeting
  • Serve on the Parish Standing Liturgical Committee which meets twice a year to plan liturgies
  • Attend major parish fellowship activities and be involved with youth needs at those gatherings
  • Oversee a budget for Youth Formation
  • Other duties as assigned

ADMINISTRATION DUTIES

  • Open and close the Parish Office; collect mail; and respond to messages in a timely manner
  • Manage parish calendar (Google); database (Realm); and financial input software (QuickBooks)
  • Co-manage parish social media (Facebook & Instagram; and website (Square Space)
  • Build and send out weekly parish eNews (Constant Contact)
  • Build and print weekly bulletins; collaborate with rector on seasonal/special changes
  • Order our various supplies, i.e custodial and office supplies, Altar Guild supplies, etc.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Tend to diocesan emails for data requests, i.e. parochial report, lay servers, Safe Church, etc.
  • Gather reports from parishioners and publish the Annual Report for the Annual Parish Meeting
  • Maintain an orderly copy and supply room
  • Oversee the campuses Key Log
  • Work with lay leader of the parish to oversee Safe Church trainings and CORI background checks
  • Work with the Newcomers Committee and rector to ensure proper matriculation of newcomers
  • Work with the Stewardship Committee on mailings and ingathering and documentation of pledges
  • Work with the Lay Ministry Coordinator (who schedules lay ministry) to publish monthly schedule
  • Send quarterly giving statements to parishioners
  • Save hard copies of bulletins and newsletters for archives
  • Schedule weddings, baptisms, confirmations, receptions, and burials; record in service registers
  • Assist persons who wish to purchase plots in Memorial Churchyard
  • Coordinate facility rentals
  • Assist with other duties as needed
  • Work with rector to find Parish Administrator tasks that can be supported by lay volunteers

NOTE: If the right candidate is ordained (or is seeking ordination), additional responsibilities include:

  • Preaching monthly; Serving liturgically at least twice per month
  • Engaging in diocesan/synod life as needed/instructed by your bishop
  • Offering pulpit (and sacramental supply if a presbyter) in rector’s absence
  • Offers pastoral support in rector’s absence
  • Attend Vestry meetings and annual Vestry Retreat
  • Attend Clergy Conference, Clergy Education Days, and Clergy Retreat.
