|The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida announces its search for an Associate for Music and Liturgy, the lead and principal music minister at Bethesda. The Associate for Music and Liturgy ideally will hold an advanced degree in organ, music, or related field, and have substantial experience in leading music ministry in large Episcopal or other highly liturgical congregational contexts.
The Associate for Music and Liturgy will plan all the musical and liturgical details for weekly Sunday services, special services on the first Sunday of each month during the program year (including evensongs), and all principal feasts, as well as other occasional services. The Associate will ably accompany congregational singing, conduct the Bethesda Choir (a professional ensemble of 20-25 voices), perform a broad repertoire of organ music appropriate to various occasions, and recruit, rehearse, and conduct various instrumental ensembles for major services.
The Associate must be knowledgeable and appreciative of the breadth of the Anglican/Episcopal musical tradition and sensitive and creative in making use of the breadth of that tradition, including Morning Prayer as well as The Holy Eucharist Rite II. This includes singing the majority of hymns in The Hymnal 1982, using various musical settings for psalms and canticles, coaching the clergy to chant parts of the service, selecting choral repertoire ranging from early music to modern compositions, preparing incidental music that fits with the season and occasion, and improvising with creativity and passion. The ideal candidate will have the experience to build on the existing foundation of excellence and to initiate new musical and liturgical traditions in a community with a high standard of musical expectation.
In addition, the Associate for Music and Liturgy shares with the Rector and other Associates the broad overall responsibility for the mission and ministry of Bethesda. In that role, the Rector relies on all the Associates for counsel and for input on the vision and direction of the parish, as well as a shared pastoral sensitivity for all under our care.
Bethesda-by-the-Sea is the largest parish in the Diocese of Southeast Florida, with an average Sunday attendance of 465 and an annual operating budget of $3.6 million. The staff consists of a (lay) Associate for Music and Liturgy, a (lay) Associate for Administration, an (ordained) Associate for Christian Education, Pastoral Care and Outreach, a Curate, a Director of Children and Youth Ministries, several non-stipendiary and seasonal clergy, and twelve additional full-time staff. A beautiful, English-gothic church and large building complex provide a venue for rich worship, superb music, and excellent ministry. Strong parish leadership through the Vestry and active committees shapes direction, priorities, and policies. Myriad ministries draw parishioners into worship, education, and service to the wider community and the world.
The Austin organ was installed in 1999/2000, when David Broome was Tonal Director of the company. It consists of 109 ranks (67 in the Chancel divisions and 42 in the Gallery) and features rich principal choruses, a wide variety of solo stops, and colorful chorus reeds—all of which enable effective accompaniments and solo and ensemble performances of all types of music. Two four-manual consoles, one in the chancel and one in the gallery, can each play the entire instrument or be played separately.
Bethesda-by-the-Sea has been in a phase of renewed focus on strategic growth in mission and ministry following the calling of a new Rector in 2011. Now, with more-stable finances and healthier stewardship, the parish plans to focus more outwardly on outreach and evangelism ministries.
Bethesda is located a block from one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast in the Town of Palm Beach, a barrier island. Across the bridge, West Palm Beach and the rest of Palm Beach County offer all big city amenities.
