|The Rt. Rev. Frank T. Griswold III, the 25th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, and the Rev. J. Barney Hawkins IV, PhD, co-chair of the VTS Bicentennial Campaign, will lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, January 22-31, 2019.
Hawkins has observed: “A pilgrimage to the land ‘flowing with milk and honey’ where Jesus walked feeds the soul and changes the heart.”
The community of travelers will have an in-depth encounter with the sacred geography of the Holy Land, its story and people. Lodging at two fine hotels in the region—the Scots Hotel in the Galilee and the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem—will provide pleasant places for reflection and rest, fellowship and fun. There will be an optional extension (February 1-2) to see Madaba and Petra in Jordan.
Griswold served as the 25th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1998-2006. Before becoming Presiding Bishop, Griswold was Bishop of Chicago (1987-1997) and Bishop Coadjutor of Chicago (1985-1987). He was ordained to the priesthood in 1963 and served three parishes in the Diocese of Pennsylvania before being elected bishop. He was educated at St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. and earned an A.B. in English literature at Harvard College (1959). He attended the General Theological Seminary and earned his B.A. and M.A. in theology at Oriel College, Oxford University (1962, 1966).
Hawkins joined VTS in 2000. Before his appointment in 2017 as the co-chair of the Bicentennial Campaign, he was vice president for Institutional Advancement and the Arthur Carl Lichtenberger Professor in Pastoral Theology. He has degrees from Furman University (1970), Duke Divinity School (1974), and Duke University (1981). His publications include Staying One, Remaining Open: Education Leaders for a 21st Century Church; The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to the Anglican Communion; and Words That Listen: A Literary Companion to the Lectionary, Volumes 1 and 2.
