|This March, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine is pleased to offer a range of public events, tours, workshops, and concerts as part of the ongoing exhibition, The Value of Sanctuary: Building a House Without Walls at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street).
The full slate of programs includes choral and organ concerts from the Cathedral’s Great Music in a Great Space recital series, along with performances by global fusion band Jog Blues and Artists in Residence Eiko Otake and Alessandra Belloni; a sonic exploration featuring guitars from the legendary Lou Reed’s collection; wide-ranging discussions with speakers including arborist William Logan, ecologist William Schuster, religious scholar Elaine Pagels, and surgeon and author Siddhartha Mukherjee; and a selection of Cathedral tours and children’s workshops focusing on the nature of sanctuary and refuge.
The Value of Sanctuary: Building a House Without Walls, on view through June 30, 2019, explores the question of sanctuary through the work of modern and contemporary artists. Throughout the course of the exhibition, visitors will be invited to explore the meaning of sanctuary through many viewpoints, expanding upon the Cathedral’s guiding mission and role as a sacred space, cultural center, and platform for the urgent issues of our times.
